I have been there too... drowning in paper piles. It is overwhelming to go through it all and keep it organized. The best way to keep the paper monster at bay is knowing what to keep and what to shred.
Keep for one month: fixed bills like utility bills, credit card receipts to compare to your monthly statement
Keep for one year: credit card statements (do not keep printed copies if you have access to them online through card website), bank statements (also online), insurance policies' documents
Keep for seven years: tax returns and supporting documents, 1099 interest statements
Keep forever, preferably in a fireproof box: wills, house deed, car title, bond certificates, medical cars, social security card, passports
